yes if you have non-white text nodes then you get what you ask for:-)
Moral of the story is put all text in xsl:text, don't leave it lying
around at the top level of your template.

<xsl:template match="/root">
 <xsl:text>function </xsl:text>
  <xsl:value-of select='xxx'  />(){<xsl:value-of select='yyy'/>
 <xsl:text>}</xsl:text>
</xsl:template>

which breaks the "Moral" above, but only to show that you don't have to
follow it slavishly, the (){ is OK where it is, although you could of
course also put that in its own xsl:text on its own line.
