I understand your concern. I'm pretty familiar with XML Schema now,
but I'm not relishing the prospect of having to get my head around the
XQuery Semantics and the XPath/XQuery regulations about how different
types are cast to each other -- which casts are possible and which
aren't, what kind of durations and date/times I can compare with each
other and what it'll mean when I do, and so on -- and the names of all
those new functions.

All that I can recommend is that you (and others) write to the
comments list (public-qt-comments@w3.org) expressing your concerns and
preferably giving real examples that demonstrate why it's a concern
and recommending changes that would meet your requirements. The WGs
can't be blamed for producing bad specs if no one points out why
they're bad. And the earlier that the comments are made, the easier it
will be for the WGs to change their minds.
