This may have been me - typeTagger 
(http://www.schemavalid.com/utils/typeTagger.zip) generates, from a 
schema, a transform which will add type attributes to elements in an 
instance document.

It works for most complex types but I haven't tried it on substitution 
groups, I think that won't work.
