What about replacing all occurances of
<xsl:apply-templates/>
with
<xsl:apply-templates select="." mode="choose"/>
and add a template
<xsl:template match="*" mode="choose">
<xsl:choose>
<xsl:when test="$print = 'yes'">
<xsl:apply-templates mode="print"/>
</xsl:when>
<xsl:otherwise>
<xsl:apply-templates/>
</xsl:otherwise>
</xsl:choose>
</xsl:template>
Should work ;-)
