I'm not sure what the "variable" refers to in the subject line. If I
understand your question I think you want to take the identity transform
from the xslt spec and add
<xsl:template match="@CT">
<xsl:attribute name="CT">
<xsl:value-of select="."/>/<xsl:value-of select="1+count(../preceding::*[@CT=current()])"/>
</xsl:attribute>
</xsl:template>
