I have solved my problem, and yes, it was me. *smacks own forehead*
I had the following in my .Xdefaults:
#ifdef COLOR
*customization: -color
*Background: white
*Foreground: black
*highlightColor: black
[other stuff]
#endif
I commented out and it now works.
Thanks for your help -- I apologize for wasting your time on
something so silly.
