Don't know if it's relevant but I have observed something
similar. 
It's a warning only, the files are there with today's date.

/: tar xf /download/xfree/xfree86-4.0.3-devel.tar
tar: usr/X11R6/lib/modules/fonts/libbitmap.a: Cannot utime: Invalid argument
tar: usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb/keycodes/digital/lk: Cannot utime: Invalid argument
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors
