It is correct, if you install xfce, or compile xfce yourself.

mkdir -p /usr/X11R6/var is the command to create it.

Why do you have to rebuild font.dir file? Was it corrupted? It worked for
you with xwin -fullscreen mode... then you try to rebuild and perhaps madea
mistake or something is wrong on your system and you corrupted it.
