I use to start any application (twm, xterm, xmodmap) after xwin not with
'start', but with run.exe from cygutils, e.g.
http://www.neuro.gatech.edu/users/cwilson/cygutils/unversioned/run/
This will prevent any further DOS box.
With xwin this does not work so far (xwin and all other applications execute,
but do not show up on the screen).
