I've never done that but that does seem plausible.  (I'm always trying for 
minimal installations.)

That sounds correct, now that I know the background.  But I can't recall ever 
having to set PATH explicitly for Cygwin though.  It's just worked.

I guess it's time to request the standard problem solving data as described on 
<http://cygwin.com/problems.html>, which is to run
        cygcheck -s -v -r > cygcheck.out
then including that cygcheck.out file *as an attachment* on a reply to this 
email.
